VRT present at EBU Formats Forum 2024 with five innovative TV formats

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the world’s largest alliance of public service media, is gearing up for the EBU Formats Forum 2024. This annual event brings together public broadcasters to showcase their latest television formats, explore collaborative opportunities, and discuss the evolving trends in the television industry. The EBU Formats Forum is a hub for creative exchange, where broadcasters present formats with the potential to resonate with audiences worldwide. This year, VRT has been nominated for five of its original programs, highlighting its strength in producing engaging and innovative content.

The EBU Formats Forum serves as a crucial platform for public broadcasters to exchange ideas, with a focus on creative and innovative storytelling that reflects the values of public service media (PSM). The 2024 edition will see participants from across Europe presenting their strongest formats, ranging from entertainment and factual programming to lifestyle and youth content.

VRT has earned nominations for five diverse formats, each of which showcases a unique approach to storytelling:

  • "A Reason to Be Jolly" (Vrede op aarde) – A feel-good show that celebrates stories of peace, joy, and community, particularly during the holiday season.

  • "The Backpack of Life" (De Rugzak) – A reflective format where participants unpack their life journeys through key objects and memories.

  • "The Dream Factory" (De Droomfabriek) – A heartwarming format that helps ordinary people realize their dreams, both big and small.

  • "Bunch of Amateurs" (Goed Gespeeld!) – A light-hearted and comedic competition that celebrates the fun of amateurism.

  • "The 90s for Teenagers" (De jaren 90 voor tieners) – A nostalgic look back at the 1990s, designed to introduce modern teens to the defining pop culture and trends of the decade.

Els Roovers, Head of Content Devlopment at VRT: "We are so proud to play an active role in EBU Formats Forum, where we showcase and share the best of our creative IP with other public broadcasters. To discuss and share the best format beats, challenges during production, innovation and ways to work together, is of great value and leaves us with tremendous inspiration and energy every time."

This year, three awards will be presented to the best formats in the following categories:

  • Favorite format – Recognizing the format with the most universal appeal and entertainment value.

  • Format that best reflects PSM values – Celebrating a format that embodies the principles of public service media, such as diversity, inclusivity, and public interest.

  • Favorite paper format – Highlighting the best format concept that has yet to be produced but holds significant potential for future development.

With five nominations, VRT International is poised for a strong showing at the event, reflecting its ability to create content that not only entertains but also aligns with the core values of public service media. The EBU Formats Forum 2024 promises to be an exciting event for broadcasters and creatives alike, offering a platform to discover new formats with the potential for international success. VRT International’s selection reinforces its reputation as a leading player in the European broadcasting landscape, committed to delivering innovative, high-quality content.
