VRT unveils innovative vertical series "Red Flag" on VRT MAX and TikTok

VRT has unveiled its latest drama series, Red Flag, a show filmed entirely in a vertical format. With this innovative project, VRT aims to cater to the viewing habits of young people, who increasingly use their smartphones as their primary screen. Red Flag offers a unique and confrontational look at how technology dominates our lives and how thin the line is between personal freedom and digital control. The main roles are played by Ayana Doucouré and Vincent Banic, who take viewers into the digital world of Luna and David, filled with red flags and toxic vibes.

A new viewing experience

With "Red flag", VRT MAX is taking a step into a new direction. A vertical series seamlessly aligns with the way young people consume media on their smartphones. With short and powerful episodes, "Red flag" tells an intriguing story in a visual language that young people are accustomed to today. The series will be available on both VRT MAX and social media, making it hyper-accessible wherever the viewer wants.
Ruth Degraeve, Manager VRT MAX

In Red Flag, the smartphone life of the successful 39-year-old advertising executive David (Vincent Banić) is suddenly placed in the hands of the 23-year-old Luna (Ayana Doucouré), a young student. What begins as a playful game full of attraction grows into an obsessive and uncomfortable confrontation where the boundaries between reality, power, and intimacy blur. As a viewer, you experience everything from Luna's perspective: every message she sends, every photo or video she opens, becomes visible on the screen. The result is an immersive and sometimes confrontational viewing experience that raises questions about privacy and how we handle our digital identity.

VRT MAX and VAF focus on innovative series

Red flag is the result of close collaboration between VAF and VRT. After the briefing that both parties sent out together in 2022 for shorter young adult formats, they financed another innovative series for young people with Red flag. With Red flag, VRT MAX launches its first vertical drama series. A real challenge for the creators during the production process, resulting in an innovative way of filming and a completely new approach to the recordings.

We aim to find storytelling formats that best fit the world of young adults, and this proposal completely met that goal.
Nikolaas Dewilde, Head of Digital Programming at VRT MAX

Red flag was developed with a team of experienced and young creators from the production house Percy Percy. The concept and atypical narrative were conceived by Alexander Van Damme and Stijn Steyaert. Directed by Jaap van Veen. The script was written by Ingrid Coppé, Stijn Steyaert, Emiel Van Wouwe, and Jaap van Veen.

In Red flag, current themes around digital security form a common thread. Therefore, VRT MAX joins forces with DNS Belgium. With Red flag, they want to make young people more aware of the dangers through realistic scenarios and help them handle their online identity more safely.

Red Flag is a co-production of Percy Percy and VRT MAX. The series was created with the support of the Flemish Audiovisual Fund (VAF) of the Flemish Government, the Tax Shelter measure of the Belgian Federal Government, and in collaboration with DNS Belgium.
